Inspired by Alvar Aalto
Stockmann Department Store in Helsinki had an exhibition called “Franck & Aalto, Arjen muotoilijat” / “Kaj Franck and Alvar Aalto, Every Day Life’s Designers”. I was happy to find out that one of my art works was included in that exhibition.
In 2006, Iittala, in collaboration with Alvar Aalto Foundation, had a Jubilee celebrating the 70th anniversary of “Paris Glass”. They asked me to create clothing + handbag collections, and a linen tablecloth set, inspired by Paris glass, the classic Aalto Vase, also known as the Savoy Vase. The collection was published and sold internationally under the name of “Hanna Sarén for Iittala inspired by Alvar Aalto”.
I also made two art pieces, a small one for Finland and a large version for Antwerp’s Iittala Store. Pictured above, you see the smaller one with price tag!
And, it is time once again to celebrate this world famous vase. Alvar Aalto Foundation has a new exhibition called Paris glass, The Aalto Vase – 75 years on, in the Gallery of Alvar Aalto Museum, May 12 – October 2, 2011.
